Many people ask exactly what is counselling?
There's no great mystery to the way I work. We build a trustworthy relationship. I take time to listen to you and you'll find me approachable, empathetic, compassionate and confidential.
Are you ever shocked by what a client tells you?
Simply put - NO! I work to the standards of the BACP Ethical Framework. This means I'm completely non-judgemental and discreet. At the beginning of our sessions we will agree a contract that set's out the confidentiality of how I work. The only time we need to revisit this is if a client's safety (or someone else's) or well-being might be at risk or there's a risk of the law being broken.
Will you tell me what to do?
Again - the answer is no! Working ethically you are in control of your own destiny! The client has full autonomy!
How often will I need to attend counselling?
I offer an initial assessment appointment. Once I know what the presenting issue/issues are we would normally agree a way of working and meet weekly. I offer a review appointment on our sixth session. Some clients find this may be enough - depending on the nature of our work other clients will attend open ended sessions.
